Museum of the folk painter Theophilos : It is at the area of Varea - suburb of Mytilene - housed in a building of austere architectural structure and which has been built in 1965, inside a bright green olive grove. It houses 86 paintings of the famous folk painter Theophilos Chatzimichael. Theophilos (1873-1934) was born and lived the first years of his childhood at this picturesque area - of Varea - feeling that generously imparted to his paintings. He toured - restless and dreamy as he was - from Smyrne to Pilion and Larissa and eventually he returns definitely to Mytilene in 1926 where he was discovered by the eminent Lesvian art-critic and editor Elephteriadis -Teriade.

Teriade made Theophilos famous as he organized his first exhibition in Paris and afterwards he organized a permanent exhibition with some of Theophilos' paintings at the Museum of Louvre.

These particular works of folk art belong to the mature period of Theophilos' painting and are distinguished by authentic chromatic harmony, realistic authenticity of the represented figures, the vividness and the effortless impulsiveness of the painter. The building that houses the homonymous Museum has donated (1964) by Terriade to the Municipality of Mytilene.

Museum of Modern Art - Library of Elephteriadi - Teriade : It is next to the building that houses the Museum of Theophilos at the suburb Varea. At the 16 of its 20 rooms, 29 Teriade's books are performed with the illustrations of famous artists as Picasso, Chagall, Laurence, Vyon, Lezeau, Matisse, Le Corbusier, Giacometti etc.

The idea of the illustrated books that had Teriade results from his editorial  experience and his deep  knowledge with the art of painting and medieval manuscripts.

In every room of the Museum there is exhibited in a showcase the original of every book, while most of its pictures and pages are exhibited on the walls. Also among the others there are 40 paintings of Theophilos Chatzimichael and works of art belonging to the equally eminent Greek painter Tsarouchi.
